Millwork, in plain language
Millwork is the trade word for the finished wood in a house: the casing around your doors, the baseboard, the crown, the paneling on a wall, the mantel over a fireplace, the shelving built into an alcove. It is the layer that decides whether a room feels finished or feels like a box with furniture in it.

Cut on site, because houses are not square
No house is truly plumb, level or square, especially not an older one. Trim ordered to a drawing and installed to a tape measure will show gaps at every corner. Good trim work is scribed and cut to the wall that is actually there.
That is slower, and it is the entire difference between millwork that looks custom and millwork that looks like it came from a big-box store in a bundle.
Paneling and feature walls
Picture-frame paneling and wainscot are among the highest-impact, lowest-material upgrades in a house. The cost is almost entirely labor and layout: getting the panel sizes proportional to the wall and consistent from one wall to the next, and working around outlets and switches so they do not land halfway through a rail.
